What is Discover Needham Local First?

The Needham Business Association (N.B.A.) has begun a campaign known as Discover Needham Local First to educate consumers about 1.) the significant benefits of purchasing goods and services from locally owned businesses and 2.) to let residents of Needham and beyond know about the wonderful retail and restaurant establishments and myriad services available right here in Needham.

Why Buy Local?

We have a lot of choices available to shop, dine or purchase any number of goods and services. When we shop or dine at locally owned businesses, we help our community in a multitude of ways. However, if we shop at non-locally owned businesses (internet, big-box stores, etc.) we hurt our local economy and community. Here are some facts:

• Significantly more money stays in Needham when purchases are made at locally owned, rather than nationally owned, businesses. For every $100 spent at a locally owned business, $73 stays in Needham and goes towards wages, job creation, taxes and more. On the other hand, for every $100 spent at a non-locally owned business, only $43 remains in Needham.
• Customer service is dramatically improved.
• Local business owners invest more in the local community because owners and employees live locally and are more interested in the community’s success.
• Using local businesses helps the environment because it’s more energy efficient. Public benefits far outweigh public costs. Local businesses require comparatively little infrastructure investment and make more efficient use of public services than most “big box” stores or national chains. • Non-profit organizations receive an average 350% greater support from local business owners than they do from non-locally owned businesses.
