The Ray of Hope Program (Recognize a Youth) was created by the Needham Youth Commission, in partnership with the Needham Business Association. The program honors young people who have performed outstanding service to the Needham Community, or who serve as excellent role models for their peers.
In an era in which youth and their behaviors are too-frequently noted in a negative context, this program seeks to acknowledge positive youth activites and validate youth who are engaged in making Needham a community that cares. The Ray of Hope Program is a recognition that young people and their development are of critical importance to the functioning of the Needham community and our collective futures.
Each month, a deserving child is presented with a check for $50 by an NBA sponsor, and a certificate of achievement from the Needham Youth Commission. Also, the child has the opportunity to speak about his/her experiences during a short interview. The entire "ceremony" is filmed by the local cable T.V. station for multiple broadcasts. Also, a photo of the presentation is published in the "Needham Times".
