 Annual Dinner well attended….

On November 17, 2005 the Needham    Business Association’s Annual Dinner  was attended by 110 businesspersons and government representatives including Chairman of the Board of Selectman, John Bulian, Selectman Jim Healy, State Senator Scott Brown and State Representative Lida Harkins.

Held at the Needham Sheraton, the event began with networking, cocktails and a cheese display. Guests mingled and viewed the several business displays set up by members. Guests moved into the main dining room and enjoyed their  salads as Senator Scott Brown presented a personal introduction of Lt. Governor Healey. Brown complimented Healey for her quick action when the Needham High School state funding was in jeopardy. Healey was able to make the funding possible saving Needham taxpayers   thousands of dollars.

Charlie Wagner, outgoing President, was the mistress of ceremony, and presented the bio of Healey. Then, Lieutenant  . Governor Healey spoke of state issues that present obstacles to new businesses trying to establish themselves in Massachusetts.

Healey reassured members that the State   government is working to change the issues of high unemployment insurance, the high cost of health insurance, and the huge permitting process that is currently used. Healey kept the attention of the NBA members, and was extremely well prepared.  After a few questions, Healey quickly bid her good-byes with a few photos and handshakes.

A few surprises at the Annual Dinner Awards Ceremony

The Needham Business Association presented a few surprises during the Annual Dinner’s Award ceremony.

The Sparkle award was given to Petrini Corporation for their recent improvements to 25-45 Chapel Street block. During the recent road     improvements and town construction projects, Petrini lost it’s door front parking at 25-35 Chapel Street. In an effort to improve the area, Petrini  installed large planters, park benches, tables and chairs, and architectural lighting. The area is now a great asset to the entrance of the Needham Square.  Bob Hentschel, Director of Assets at Petrini accepted the award on behalf of the Petrini Corporation.

A Certificate of Achievement was presented to Paulette Harwood of Paulette’s Ballet Studio for her continued support of the NBA’s Street Fair and  Harvest Fairs. A member since 1974, Paulette has continuously sent dancers to the fairs to entertain NBA audiences on the Town Common. Paulette appreciated the award and noted that her dance troupe has been asked to provide the same “seven minutes of entertainment” at an upcoming Celtic’s game. Good Luck and Thank you Paulette!

Gary Donelan, branch manager of Needham’s   Middlesex Savings Bank is the recipient of the   Thomas E. Caulfield Customer Service Award. The awards committee tallied the votes and Dorothy Caulfield, widow of Thomas Caulfield, confirmed that Donelan provides continuous outstanding  customer service. The Thomas E. Caulfield award in it’s tenth year of existence, is named for a former salesman at Taylor’s Stationery and former NBA President, is for the  businessperson that provides excellent customer service. Accompanied by his staff and management of Middlesex Savings Bank, Gary accepted the award with great appreciation, and acknowledged his  continued commitment to excellent customer service and his motivation to training his staff to support customers. Congratulations Gary!

Kathy Lewis was awarded the prestigious “Member of the Year award” at the annual   dinner.  A longstanding board member,   membership chair, Street Fair/Harvest Fair  committee member and consumer advocate,  Kathy Lewis’ outstanding commitment to the NBA made her a clear choice for Member of the Year. A steadfast ally of the NBA, Kathy consistently has been active participant in important decision making processes. Pleasantly surprised to see her daughter, son in law and her cute grandson appear at the podium, Kathy graciously     accepted the award while holding her grandson. Congrats!

Dick Atkinson was presented the “Member of the Year” award for his continuous commitment to the association. New to the NBA Board in 2005, Dick Atkinson immediately became involved with NBA activities. Consistently present at Street Fair and Harvest Fair committee meetings, Dick volunteered to support the events by assisting with table distribution. Committed to the mission of the NBA and the success of NBA events, Dick encouraged family and friends to come to the events to volunteer and to meet new people. Also, dedicated to increasing membership, Dick has referred many businesses to the NBA. Dick’s wife Helen, (see photo) family and co-workers were present at the ceremony to see him accept the award. Congratulations Dick!
